So now, my darling, you are finding your voice and people are listening.
Beware my love for those syncophants are nothing but wailing sirens and though
they may climb over each other’s scaly bodies to lick the dirt from underneath
your toenails, none of them will ever say no the way I do.

Lucky
Found my mother with her head in the oven the other day,
wearing only an apron and her lucky red shoes. “Happy homemaker,” she laughed,
with tears in her eyes. “I’m just trying to bake a cake, honey. Flourless
chocolate and almond.”
I guess that’s what happens when you’re gluten-free!
Zoo
They sat with their hooves dangling in the water, sipping
chocolate milk with cigarettes they had poached from their dead keeper. It had
been a successful break, they agreed. Little did they know, Cow thought as he
laughed with them. He was going to turn them in for meat and money, and a
lifetime in the Caribbean as the DJ, Ja Cow.
Storm
He clings to her neck, oblivious to the humping dogs, to their
smugly sweating sunday brunchers falling off their bicycles in lycra on a ride
to nowhere, to the approaching hurricane. As he kisses her, he thinks, “I could
die tonight,” and she wonders if there’s any milk left.
Lump
I like to sleep on my front.
I feel safe in my web, my spiral spun in cottonsilk. For the last few weeks
I’ve had a sharp little tingle in my breast. Vaguely I’ve walked my fingers
over it. I think I have a lump. It’s about the sizeof a snail. I’m on its
trail.
